Defining Objectives and KPIs for a Digital Coaching Program
Defining success before launching a digital coaching program is essential. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and objectives not only set targets to measure the program's effectiveness but also guide necessary adjustments, shape and prioritize the program's features, and ensure that all relevant outcomes are systematically tracked for thorough analysis and evaluation of user data.
Steps to Define Effective KPIs and Objectives
Step 1: Identify Program Objectives
Begin by defining clear objectives for what the coaching program intends to achieve. These objectives will guide the development of your coaching program, ensuring that all features and functions align with and support these goals.
Tipp: Consider User Testimonials. Operationalize objectives by considering desired user testimonials. For example, an objective like "Improving User Skills" could be paired with a testimonial such as, "I now understand how to eat to reduce my blood pressure thanks to the coaching."
Step 2: Establish KPIs
For each objective, establish at least one precise KPI. These KPIs should quantitatively measure the success towards achieving the defined objectives. One objective may be measured by multiple KPIs.
Step 3: Define Measures
Translate your KPIs into concrete, measurable objectives, such as aiming for a "monthly engagement rate of 75% within the first year." Define one measure for each KPI.
Examples
It can be beneficial to list the objectives, KPIs, and measures in a table format. This provides a clear overview of the defined objectives and metrics, ensuring that each objective is paired with a corresponding KPI and measure.
| Objective | KPI | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Improving User Skills: Increase users’ understanding of balanced diets and nutritional benefits | Increase user knowledge on balanced diet by 20%. | Average change in knowledge scores, based on the proportion of correct answers given, before and after participating in the nutrition education module, among all users who commenced the nutrition coaching. |
| Changing User Behavior: Increase level of physical activity | Encourage daily steps to exceed 10,000. | Average number of daily steps measured by the step tracker within the first 7 days after the user completed the app registration. |
| Enhancing User Well-being or Health: Improve blood pressure level | Reduce average systolic blood pressure by 10 mmHg. | Average reduction in systolic blood pressure, comparing measurements from the first week and the last week after at least 3 months of participation. Include only users who completed both measurement periods. |
| Ensuring User Satisfaction: High user engagement | Achieve a user engagement rate of 70%. | Share of users engaging with the coach weekly (answering at least one question) over a six-month period among all users who completed the registration. |
| Ensuring User Satisfaction: Positive evaluation of the app | Achieve an app store rating of at least 4.0. | Average app store rating of at least 4.0 across the Play Store and App Store with a minimum of 100 ratings. |
| Enhancing the Likability of a Related Product/Brand: Boost user satisfaction with their health insurance | Significantly lower cancellation rate among app users. | Cancellation rate is at least 5% lower among app users within the first 12 months after registration, compared to a stratified control group. |
| Evaluating the Feasibility of the Coaching Program: High retention rate | Retention rate of at least 30% within the first six months. | Share of users who open the app at least once per week at the end of six months after app download as a percentage of those who downloaded the app. |
| Evaluating the Feasibility of the Coaching Program: High completion rate of the program | Completion rate of at least 40% within the first year. | Percentage of users who complete all modules of the coaching program within the first year among all users who completed the registration. |
